The Link Between Water Damage and Mold | SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion

11/1/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion water and mold SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion is here to help with water and mold damage

Water damage and mold growth share an intricate relationship that often goes unnoticed until it's too late. As professionals in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion is well-acquainted with the subtle dance between water and mold, and how one can inevitably lead to the other.

The Silent Culprit

Water damage is like an uninvited guest that arrives unannounced, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Whether it's a burst pipe, a leaking roof, or a flooded basement, water intrusion can permeate every nook and cranny of a property. Little do homeowners realize that this moisture provides the perfect breeding ground for mold spores, setting the stage for a symbiotic relationship that can turn into a homeowner's nightmare.

Learning About Mold

Mold is a resilient organism, lurking in the shadows and thriving on moisture and organic materials. As water infiltrates a space, it becomes a catalyst for mold spores to awaken from their dormant state. Mold growth typically begins within 24-48 hours of water exposure, making swift action imperative to prevent a small water issue from escalating into a full-blown mold infestation.

The Domino Effect: How Water Damage Paves the Way for Mold

  1. Moisture as a Catalyst: Water creates an environment conducive to mold growth. Mold spores, omnipresent in the air, settle on damp surfaces and begin their reproductive cycle.

  2. Building Materials as a Buffet: Mold feeds on cellulose-rich materials present in walls, ceilings, and floors. As water saturates these materials, it provides sustenance for mold to flourish.

  3. Humidity as an Accelerant: Lingering moisture increases indoor humidity, creating an atmosphere where mold can thrive. Poor ventilation exacerbates the issue, trapping humid air and creating pockets of ideal conditions for mold colonization.

SERVPRO's Perspective: Nipping the Issue in the Bud

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion understands the urgency of addressing water damage promptly to curb mold growth. Through a multi-faceted approach, our experts tackle both the visible and invisible aspects of water damage:

  1. Rapid Water Extraction: Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment, SERVPRO swiftly removes standing water, preventing further saturation of building materials.

  2. Thorough Drying Processes: Our technicians employ advanced drying techniques to eliminate residual moisture, ensuring a dry environment that inhibits mold proliferation.

  3. Mold Remediation Expertise: In the unfortunate event that mold has taken hold, SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion specializes in safe and effective mold remediation. This involves the identification and removal of mold-infested materials, thorough cleaning, and preventative measures to impede future growth.

Preventative Measures: Guarding Against Future Woes

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion emphasizes the importance of preventative measures to break the cycle of water damage and mold growth:

  1. Regular Inspections: Routine inspections can detect potential water issues before they escalate. Identifying and repairing leaks promptly can thwart mold's attempts to establish a foothold.

  2. Proactive Maintenance: Addressing maintenance issues, such as roof leaks and plumbing problems, can prevent water damage from occurring in the first place.

  3. Humidity Control: Proper ventilation and humidity control are crucial in mold prevention. SERVPRO recommends the use of dehumidifiers in damp areas to maintain optimal indoor humidity levels.

Conclusion: A Proactive Approach for a Mold-Free Tomorrow

In the intricate dance between water damage and mold growth, SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion stands as a guardian, offering insights and solutions to break the cycle. By understanding the symbiotic relationship between these two adversaries, homeowners can take proactive measures to safeguard their properties and ensure a mold-free environment. Remember, in the battle against mold, time is of the essence, and SERVPRO of Bloomington is here to lend a helping hand, ensuring that water damage doesn't pave the way for mold infestation.

If you’ve ever experienced issues with mold, you know that it’s more than just an unsightly nuisance.

Mold can silently wreak havoc on your health and property. In this extensive guide, we will delve deep into the dangers of mold, how to detect its presence, and the indispensable role of professional mold remediation services. Whether you're dealing with mold removal, mold remediation, or the costs involved, this comprehensive resource will equip you with vital knowledge to protect your Carbondale, Illinois or Marion, Illinois property.

Understanding Mold

Mold, a type of fungus, serves a vital role in nature by breaking down organic matter. However, when it infiltrates our indoor spaces, it can cause a multitude of issues. Let's explore the key aspects of mold:

Health Risks: Exposure to mold can lead to a range of health problems. Mold spores are allergens that can trigger asthma, allergies, respiratory issues, and skin irritations.

Black Mold (Stachybotrys chartarum): Often dubbed "toxic black mold," this species is particularly notorious for its mycotoxins, which can lead to severe health problems when inhaled or touched.

Property Damage: Mold thrives on organic materials like wood, drywall, and insulation, causing structural damage and costly repairs.

• Airborne Allergens: Mold releases allergenic proteins that can initiate allergies, even in individuals who haven't experienced them before.

• Mold Odor: Mold produces a distinct, musty odor that permeates the environment, making your indoor space uncomfortable and unwelcoming.

Identifying Mold Damage

Early detection is crucial for effective mold remediation. In many cases, it will be necessary to call a professional mold remediation company for mold testing. Mold often grows in concealed, inaccessible areas, rendering it invisible without professional help. Here are some telltale signs of mold damage:

• Visible Mold Growth: The most apparent indication is the presence of visible mold. It can manifest as fuzzy, discolored patches on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces.

Musty Odor: An enduring, musty smell is a strong indicator of mold growth, even if you can't see it. This scent is a result of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by mold.

Water Damage History: Properties with a history of water damage, flooding, or leaks are at higher risk for mold growth. Mold thrives in moist environments.

Health Symptoms: If occupants experience unexplained health symptoms like coughing, sneezing, congestion, or skin irritation that improve when leaving the property, mold may be the culprit.

Peeling Paint or Wallpaper: Mold can cause paint or wallpaper to peel or bubble as it grows beneath these surfaces.

The Mold Remediation Process

Mold remediation is a complex, regulated process aimed at identifying, containing, and eliminating mold to ensure the safety and health of occupants. Here's an overview of the standard mold remediation process:

Mold Inspection and Assessment

Before embarking on the remediation journey, a certified mold inspector evaluates the extent of the mold damage. They identify the type of mold, its location, and the underlying moisture source that fueled its growth.

Containment

Effective containment is vital to prevent mold spores from migrating to uncontaminated areas. Professionals utilize plastic sheeting and negative air pressure machines to isolate the affected area.

Mold Removal

The next stage involves the physical mold removal. Depending on the infestation's scale, this may entail removing and disposing of materials like drywall, insulation, or carpeting. Professionals wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to stringent safety protocols throughout this phase.

Mold Cleaning and Sanitization

All surfaces within the containment area undergo thorough cleaning and sanitization, utilizing specialized equipment and antimicrobial agents to eliminate any lingering mold spores.

Drying and Dehumidification

To prevent future mold growth, experts employ industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to fully dry the affected space. Addressing the moisture source is pivotal in mold prevention.

Post-Remediation Testing

After remediation, a certified mold testing company may perform post-remediation testing to confirm the successful resolution of the mold issue and ensure safe indoor air quality.

Assessing Mold Remediation Costs

The cost of mold remediation can vary considerably based on factors such as the extent of the infestation, the type of mold, and its location within the property. Several factors may influence mold remediation costs:

Infestation Size: Larger mold infestations typically necessitate more extensive remediation efforts, leading to higher costs.

Location Complexity: Mold in confined or challenging-to-reach areas may require additional labor and equipment, impacting the overall cost.

Mold Type: Hazardous molds, including toxic black mold, may necessitate more elaborate safety measures, driving up costs.

• Structural Damage: Mold that has caused structural deterioration may entail expensive repairs, such as drywall replacement or subfloor restoration.

Insurance Coverage: Depending on your insurance policy, a portion or the entirety of the remediation costs may be covered, reducing your financial burden.

It's crucial to remember that while mold remediation costs are a concern, the health and safety of occupants should take precedence. Cutting corners during mold remediation can result in incomplete removal and recurrent mold problems.

Routine Maintenance: Perform regular inspections and maintenance to spot and address potential problem areas early, before they become breeding grounds for mold.

How to Deal With Commercial Water Damage to Your Business | SERVPRO® of Carbondale/Marion

8/11/2023 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Damage SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion is your local commercial water restoration company. We will always be here to help clean up and get you back in business.

When commercial water damage affects your building, the impact on business can be severe.

Many sources of flooding come from internal sources. Burst pipes or a badly leaking roof can shut you down or ruin interiors and destroy inventory. Damage might also come from a bathroom flooded with sewage backup. Or it could even be an entire floor of offices soaked by a broken sprinkler system.

However, water damage can also affect businesses through natural causes. In Marion, we see a higher annual rainfall than most other places in the United States.

Knowing what to do before disaster strikes make recovering quickly and returning to business easier. Regardless of what source left the water behind, these helpful tips can guide you through handling the problem quickly and as stress-free as possible.

Know Your Building’s Layout

Familiarize yourself with different water cutoff points throughout your property, and ensure you know how to turn off the fire sprinkler system. Locate the main water cutoff valve, and be ready to shut off the entire building’s supply when necessary.

Several people should know this information, including members of the leadership team. This can help you reduce the amount of water that gets inside your business by cutting it off at the source.

Know the Types of Water Involved

When water damage happens, the type of water involved will determine how dangerous the situation is. Knowing what you’re dealing with makes a big difference in the safety of everyone in the building:

White water: This type of water most commonly results from plumbing problems. It’s not considered contaminated and is safe to handle yourself in small amounts.

Gray water: Sink drains and toilet tank overflows produce this type of flooding. The water is contaminated but not considered dangerous.

Black water: Sewage backups and storm flooding are common sources of highly contaminated black water. Always call in a professional to deal with this type of toxic water damage.

Take Action Quickly

Always attempt to identify and shut down the water source as soon as possible. Try to get fresh air circulating by opening windows and doors to expedite the drying and evaporation process. Then alert everyone in the building and outline the affected areas so that no one comes into contact with the water.

After taking these steps, be sure to thoroughly document any visible damage. This will help you speed through the insurance claim process and will be useful when deciding what parts of your building need the most reinforcement.

Remember to Be Patient

The visible water damage in your building is only part of the overall problem. Soaked wall studs, moldy framing and buckled flooring materials are only a few signs of hidden water damage. Any of these indicators should be red flags of potential damage.

If your business experiences water damage, call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion for a quick response and a shoulder to lean on. Our restoration professionals have extensive training and will work with industry-leading equipment that can dry your building out and get you back into action fast.

The cleanup and drying process can take up to a week, depending on the extent of the moisture, so be patient as our restoration team works through the cleanup and sanitation before beginning repairs. We’ll have your business back to preloss condition before you know it.

When disaster strikes your commercial property, we’ll be there to help clean up and get you back in business quickly. Call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion today at (618) 998-8828

When is time to get a sample for mold? If visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary.

Surface sampling may be useful to determine if an area has been adequately cleaned or remediated. Sampling for mold should be conducted by professionals who have specific experience in designing mold sampling protocols, sampling methods and interpreting results.

Sample analysis should follow analytical methods recommended by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), or other professional organizations.

Are there federal regulations or standards regarding mold testing?

Standards or Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for airborne concentrations of mold, or mold spores, have not been set. Currently, there are no EPA regulations or standards for airborne mold contaminants.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Protect Your Carbondale/Marion Home From Water Damage

4/25/2023 (Permalink)

Water damage in residential Carbondale/Marion home Protect your Carbondale/Marion home from water damage.

There are many ways to help protect your Carbondale/Marion home from water damages. Water losses occur when water finds its way outside of the appliances you rely on to run your household’s daily needs. When we think about the causes of severe water damage to our homes, we usually think about extreme weather like a hurricane or torrential rains. But the unfortunate reality is that extensive damage is often the result of ordinary household plumbing systems and appliances that fail – and these can be just as destructive to your home as an extreme weather event.

Preventative Measures

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to help prevent water damage from plumbing problem in your St. Charles home. It is helpful to understand some of the common causes of water damage.

These may include:

• Heating and air-conditioning systems

• Water heaters

• Valves

• Appliances

• Pipes and plumbing fixtures

How to Detect Water Damages

Water damage can often go undetected, even if the telltale signs are there. Plumbing that is housed inside the walls of your home, in less-trafficked areas like a basement or attic, or behind a cabinet or appliance, can easily go unnoticed. That’s why it’s important to check your appliances and plumbing from time to time.

  • Know where the main water supply enters your home, locate the main shut-off valve and make sure it’s functioning properly.
  • If you will be away from home for an extended period, consider shutting off the water supply, but consult with a heating professional first to understand if doing so will compromise any other systems in your home. Maintain a temperature of at least 55 degrees in your home. Also, if your home is protected by a fire sprinkler system, do not turn off the water to this system, and maintain sufficient heat to prevent a freeze-up.
  • Consider having your air-conditioning system inspected regularly by a professional. Check around the unit for indications of leaks. Check the drain lines annually and clean them if they are clogged. Change the air filter annually at a minimum.
  • Inspect water heaters, showers, tubs, toilets, sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines annually, and have them repaired if there are signs of leaks or corrosion. Be sure to include supply lines, hoses, connections and fittings in the inspection.
  • Check caulking around showers, bathtubs, sinks and toilet bases, and make repairs as needed.
  • If your refrigerator has an ice machine or water dispenser, check the hose between the wall and the refrigerator to determine if it is pinched or stressed. Also look for signs of leaking or wear and tear.
  • Check exposed plumbing (pipes, valves, etc.) for signs of leaking or corrosion. Have any pipe damage fixed immediately to prevent more costly repairs in the future.

Water damage due to a plumbing issue in your home can be life-changing. But there are some common signs that homeowners can look for, and steps they can take, to help avoid a major water issue at home.

Consider this example:

A homeowner and his family head off for a three-week vacation. While they’re away, a minor toilet leak grows, until it reaches a pace of three gallons of water per minute. By the time the homeowners returned from their three-week vacation, the unaddressed leak had poured more than 30,000 gallons of water into their home. The water ruined furniture, fixtures and irreplaceable family valuables, and rendered the property virtually uninhabitable for an extended period of time.

But this is just a cautionary tale. The following guidance is meant to help you learn about the potential water issues from common plumbing problems and how you can take steps to help prevent disaster.

Causes For Plumbing Problems

Plumbing issues can occur anywhere in your home. Frequently, lack of maintenance is the root cause of these problems. However, other causes can include:

  • Manufacturing and design defects.
  • Installation errors.
  • Exposure to cleaning products (for example, by storing chemicals under the sink or by cleaning surfaces of plumbing components).

If caught early, many plumbing problems can be addressed before serious damage occurs. For this reason, regular inspection of your home’s visible plumbing parts can be critical. Knowing the lifespan of parts and appliances is also important, as is properly maintaining the other parts of your home and its features and systems.

Signs to Look For

Want to help prevent plumbing complications from damaging your home and potentially resulting in expensive property damage or loss? Start by visually inspecting your plumbing on a regular basis. Look for drips and slow leaks. Be sure to check the areas surrounding your pipes as well. If you see water damage on cabinetry or other nearby materials, there may be an active leak that you’ll want to locate.

Your entire home plumbing system may not be visible, but there are certain places in your home where you can readily inspect plumbing components:

  • Under sinks and washtubs.
  • Inside access panels near showers, sinks or appliances.
  • Attachments to toilets, water heaters and appliances.
  • Basements and crawl spaces.

You will want to look at any piping, valves and fittings in the areas listed above. Leaks are most common at connection points, so pay close attention to the plumbing connections on faucets, washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, water heaters, water filtration systems, shut-off valves and toilets. Your home’s piping system may also have multiple connections between various sections of pipe. Appliances and fixtures themselves can cause problems, so be sure to inspect those as well, and keep up with any regular maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

The signs of a problem will vary by component. For example, problems in copper piping may look very different from problems in PEX, a common type of plastic piping. In general, you want to look for signs of corrosion, cracking, hazing, discoloration and mineral deposits from a water leak.

Contents Cleaning

All the restorable contents in the affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized. This includes area rugs, furniture, draperies, and upholstery. SERVPRO can provide wet or dry-cleaning services. Additionally, all other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to preloss condition. This includes electronics, art, wood furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, and much more. Finally, SERVPRO of St. Charles City can provide an inventory list of all “to be claimed” items.

Deodorization

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion provides specialized services that rid your insured’s home or place of business of offensive odors left behind by fire or smoke damage. We do not merely cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we seek out the sources of the odor and remove them.

WATER DAMAGE

If you have recently become a victim of commercial water damage, you may be wondering what you can do to mitigate your damages. There is a critical period in which certain actions must be taken to preserve as much of your property as possible and to decrease any health risks when water damage has occurred in a commercial space.

Preparing a Space for Water Damage Restoration

Before you enter your commercial space or any flooded building, you will need to make sure the electrical power to the structure is shut off. You should also be aware that during a flooding event, small animals or reptiles tend to seek shelter inside of buildings. Be prepared to deal with the discovery of wild animals in your space.

Protect yourself from entering any flooded building by wearing an organic vapor respirator. You can purchase these at any local paint and building supply stores. You also want to have rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. The first thing you should do is ventilate the affected areas by opening the windows and placing fans where possible.

Unfortunately, there likely will be items that you need to throw away. Any items that are porous and have absorbed contaminated floodwater cannot be restored. If your commercial space has drywall, mattresses, pillows, box springs, particle board, carpets or carpet pads, these will need to be discarded if they have become saturated. However, there is good news: If you have clothing or household fabrics that can be machine-washed, you may be able to salvage them. Use your washing machine to clean these items with a 10-minute soak at the minimum in hot water with detergent. The soap and normal wash should remove most of the contamination and any staining that is present.

Be aware that your commercial space will need a thorough professional inspection, cleaning and possibly restructuring. Water damaged walls and installations must be removed and repaired, and pockets of saturation should be exposed for drying and sanitizing. Always remember that mold growth could take a few days to appear as it thrives in a moist environment with organic-type materials such as paper or particle board and in temperatures that range between 60 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep good airflow throughout the interior environment, and maintain moderate temperatures to decrease the risk of any mold growth. It is also important that you let your space dry out before any rebuilding occurs.

If you would like more information on any of the services listed above, please call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion at (618) 998-8828.

Act Fast!

11/12/2020 (Permalink)

Flood damage is the most severe type of water loss a homeowner can experience. The faster mitigation begins, lessens the potential loss to both your home and its contents.

Ground water is sometimes referred to as "black water"  and is considered a category three biohazard. This type of water loss event should always have professional mitigation for both health and safety reasons. This is important for the home/business owner to get it taken care of immediately, to prevent many more future problems.

When SERVPRO technicians work on a site, along with restoring as much of the water loss contents as possible, we try to limit disruptions in the home and dry furnishings in place when possible.
Our air movers blow high-velocity air that causes water vapor inside objects to rise to the surface. Once that happens, the dehumidifiers capture and port out the moisture. This method enables warm, dry air to bring down the moisture levels in the room and its contents in an expedient manner. Once confirmed dry though moisture readings, we clean and disinfect all surfaces affected by groundwater to ensure they are sanitary.

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion is available at (618) 998-8828 to mitigate flood damage in your home or business. No matter the time of day or night or how large or small the water loss, we can be onsite within hours and make it "Like it never even happened."

Ways to Preapare for the Storm

7/22/2020 (Permalink)

Storm headed your way? Read these tips to prepare:

  • Always keep a battery-powered radio in your home so that you can tune to radio stations if you lose electricity. Check or change the batteries frequently.

  • Keep a flashlight in an easily accessible spot on every floor of your home. Check the batteries monthly, and replace them as needed.

  • Keep a supply of candles on hand for power failures.

  • As a safety precaution before leaving the house on vacation, unplug all electrical appliances except for those lights connected to automatic timers.

  • If you live in a storm-prone area, nail down roof shingles or use adequate adhesives to keep them from blowing off in a violent wind. For roofs with shingles that are not the seal-down type, apply a little dab of roofing cement under each tab.

  • A lightning-protection system should offer an easy, direct path for the bolt to follow into the ground and thus prevent injury or damage. Grounding rods (at least two for a house) should be placed at opposite corners of the house.

  • Don't go out during a hurricane unless you have to. However, if flooding threatens, seek high ground, and follow the instructions of civil defense personnel.

  • When a major storm is imminent, close shutters, board windows, or tape the inside of larger panes with an "X" along the full length of their diagonals. Even a light material like masking tape may give the glass the extra margin of strength it needs to resist cracking.

This could happen to your Business

7/15/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage usually occurs from flooding due to the weather in the area. But are you aware of other potential water damaging hazards in your business?

Here are some of the typical causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems. Some older buildings have outdated water sprinkler systems that work in sync with the fire alarm system. But, outdated sprinklers can malfunction and cause major water damage.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment. This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing. Just like in your own home, pipes and plumbing can fail, leading to a watery mess.

4. Backed up sewer lines. This potentially dangerous mess is often not thought about, especially in your commercial business. But, it is something that should be taken care of FAST.

When running a commercial business, it is often hard to think of everything. Water damage is usually not the first thing on your mind when running your business. In the event that you or an employee finds water, call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion to get it taken care of. SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion will get your business back in great shape so fast that it will be "Like it never even happened."

Bleach VS Mold

6/26/2020 (Permalink)

Surprisingly, bleach does NOT kill mold. Bleach can actually contribute to mold growth. The trusted and experienced SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion, is here to educate you on this topic: a common misconception: bleach + mold.

If you suspect mold at your residential or commercial property, please know that bleach is not the solution. It may seem like an inexpensive way to remove your mold problem, but, with the use of bleach, you could be causing more harm than good.

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building. This is a fallacy. Here at SERVPRO® of Cape Carbondale/Marion, our technicians are trained mold damage specialists who get started quickly to get your home or business back to normal, with specific training and certifications to handle your restoration needs. Our advanced equipment helps to detect and stop the source of water feeding the mold. We then isolate the affected area using a negative air pressure chamber.

The best way to combat a common misconception is to educate yourself, and immerse yourself in that subject.

Now that you’ve been educated on this topic: a common misconception: bleach + mold, will you give us your next mold restoration job? Call the mold specialists at (618) 998-8828. We’ll make that mold damage at your home or business "Like it never even happened."

Tips to know

One thing you need to know when it comes to a fire in your home or business is the importance of timing. Do you know the amount of time it takes for a residence to become engulfed in flames? Five minutes. According to Ready.gov, heat is more threatening than flames. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. These extreme temperatures are very harmful to human bodies.

SERVPRO of Carbonale/Marions' “restore first” mentality reduces interruption and gets you back to your life quickly. We have specific damage restoration training, personnel, and equipment.

Apartment Flooding

6/23/2020 (Permalink)

While many might believe that water loss incidents can get easily remedied in your Carbondale/Marion apartment; often conventional drying methods are not enough. From the moment that water damage occurs in the property, materials, and contents exposed begin to absorb this moisture. The best solution for apartment owners is to address these concerns with the expertise and advanced technology available to professional restoration specialists like our team.

As a contributor to a large loss recovery team, our professionals have the resources and the experience to handle a need for water removal in Southern Illinois apartment buildings. With how quickly these situations can get out of control and affect more than the initial unit, it is vital to get mitigation and containment processes started right away. The more efficient the response of professional restorers, the better they can protect the building. That is one of the advantages of choosing our SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion's team, as we have a 24/7 response to water emergencies to get personnel and effective equipment on site as promptly as possible.

The most critical concern for restoration technicians responding to a water loss incident in an apartment building is the spread of the effects to different floors and units. During the initial inspection and damage assessment portion of our restoration process, our estimator and project management can utilize sophisticated tools like our moisture readers and thermal imagery cameras to get a better understanding of moisture pockets and dampness levels in areas that can be more challenging to access.

Our SERVPRO team arrives with industry-leading equipment that can quickly work to extract standing water and begin rapid drying solutions for the affected properties. For shared wall cavities and moisture trapped between floors, we have advanced machines like our Inject-Dry unit. This device can force heated air into these spaces to work on drying them out efficiently.

While many steps often come with water loss recovery in an apartment, time is never on the side of the property owner in these emergencies. You can count on the fast response and the expertise of our SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion professionals to make water damage “Like it never even happened.” Give our professionals a call anytime at (618) 998-8828.

Did You Know?

6/23/2020 (Permalink)

Some may be under the impression that the actual flames of a fire kill people. However, it’s the smoke and toxic gases that kill more people. Another thing you need to know, is fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a three-to-one ratio.

According to https://sf-fire.org/home-fire-facts

  • Nearly 4000 Americans die each year in house fires and over 2000 are severely injured.
  • In only 3 1/2 minutes, the heat from a house fire can reach over 1100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • About 80% of all civilian deaths from fire occur in the home.
  • In rooms that are not even on fire the temperature can reach over 300 degrees; this is hot enough to melt plastic and kill the people in those rooms.
  • Adults 65 and older are more than twice as likely to die in fires as the overall population.
  • The leading cause of fire deaths is careless smoking.
  • Having a working smoke detector more than doubles one's chances of surviving a fire.
  • In 2005, 106 firefighters died in the line of duty in the United States.

It is important to be aware of these facts and to read our previous fire prevention post to help prevent a fire in your home or business.

If a fire strikes your home or business, call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion for any restoration needs.

How to Prevent Fires within your Home

6/17/2020 (Permalink)

According to the American Red Cross, house fires cause over $7 billion in property damage each year. Being prepared and conducting regular safety checks can help keep you from adding to that number.

Here are a few tips in trying to prevent a fire in your home:

Test your smoke alarms.

Test the batteries once a month. If they’re not working, replace them immediately.

Inspect heating sources.

An annual inspection will reduce your risk of fire.

  • Change filters regularly to avoid build-up of dust and lint that can easily catch fire.

Keep the stove and oven clear.

Don’t leave anything flammable near the stove or oven. Make sure curtains don’t hang over the stove, and never rest towels or a cookbook on the stove.

Stay in the kitchen.

Do not leave cooking food unattended. If you have to leave the room, take the pot off the stove or turn off the griddle first.

Check the dryer.

  • Have it inspected once a year to make sure all connections are secure.
  • Always clean out the lint trap after a load is finished.
  • Regularly check behind and around the dryer for pockets of lint or items of laundry that have fallen under or behind.

Maintain cords.

Regularly check the condition of cords and watch out for frayed wires: repair or replace cords with frayed wires immediately.

Be careful with candles.

Never leave candles unattended and always keep them away from flammable items like blankets and curtains.

Keep fire extinguishers handy.

Keep fire  extinguishers on hand and easily accessible. At the very least, keep one in the kitchen and others near high-risk areas like a fireplace.

  • Remember R.A.C.E

Fire damage is devastating, stressful, and scary. Let SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion assist with your fire damage needs by calling (618) 998-8828.

Busted Pipes can casue a huge Mess

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Southern Illinois residents barely think about the amount of pressure in their home's pipes except when it seems too low in the shower or kitchen sink. Opening up the valve might solve this problem, but at the same time, it can create a real disaster.

Increasing the pressure can lead to broken pipes in your house, followed by water damage to the area. SERVPRO can send IICRC-certified technicians to your home after such a disaster and get things dry quickly. This can keep water damage from becoming a reality for you. Water damage can affect almost anything in your house, from building materials to personal belongings.

Furniture can also become damaged as well as add to the damage sustained. SERVPRO crew members place non-staining wooden blocks under your furniture, so soaked legs do not stain carpeting. Carpeting can hold much water, so once we remove the majority of the water, we place your furniture in another area of your home so we can continue the drying process. Floating a carpet so we can force air underneath it helps dry it out more evenly. This also helps dry the floor under the carpet.

Water is a liquid, and it has no difficulty seeping into the smallest openings. Our technicians use moisture detection devices to locate this water. Because water readily evaporates into the air, we also measure its presence there. Materials quickly absorb water and then retain it easily. Our technicians use different methods to extract water wherever it occurs, and in whichever form, we find it in your home.

Our equipment ranges from extraction equipment of both liquid water and humidity in the air. Heating the interior of your home in various locations, as needed, helps make water evaporate. Once it is in the air, we can extract it with desiccant machines. Increased air currents perform a similar task of whisking water out of walls and other surfaces. Continually monitoring our progress by comparing more recent readings with our initial ones assures us of the rate your home becomes dry again.

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion wants to help you prevent water damage to your residence. Contact our professional team by calling (618) 998-8828 whenever you have a disaster affecting your home. SERVPRO is always ready to respond to your emergency.

Cleanup After the Storm

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Storms can bring a lot of damage. After the storm is over, if you want to try and cleanup, make sure the scene is safe to enter and work in. Always be sure there are no more severe storms coming your way and call for help if damage is too much for you to handle alone. Here are a few tips to review before going to cleanup in or around your business or home:

  • Be very careful climbing ladders or working on roofs.
  • Use extreme caution if using a chainsaw to cut trees or branches.
  • Cover leaking roofs before the next rain to prevent further water damage.
  • Remove wet rugs and carpet from floors.
  • Open windows and run fans if you have water damage in your home.

For more information on storm damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion at (618) 998-8828.

How to look for damage following a storm

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

When looking for damage to your home or business after a storm, it is important to be aware of any electrical wires or power lines down and if they are laying in water. Never enter the area if there are power lines down or exposed electrical wires.

Damage can occur from wind, hail, flooding, and lighting. So, if the scene is safe, assess the following:

  • Roof damage – Examine all parts of your roof (shingles, flashing, gutters and downspouts) for dents and pay attention to missing granules on asphalt shingles (as well as cracked, broken or bruised shingles).
  • Windowsills/window casings/siding – In addition to dents and dings, other signs of impact from hail include exposed surfaces or chipped paint/material (such as wood).
  • Air conditioning unit – Since this appliance is generally kept outside, it’s susceptible to hail damage and may need to be completely replaced depending on the extent of the storm damage. Look for smashed or damaged fan blade and consider having a professional inspect your AC unit to determine if any coils or internal parts are significantly damaged.

If everything seems fine on the outside, don't forget to look for inside clues.

  • Foundation – Storm damage – mainly in the form of water damage/flooding – can impact a home’s foundation because water seepage can cause expansion and cracking which can severely compromise your home’s structure.
  • Ceilings/Walls – Water damage will appear in the form of water spots, discoloration or changes in texture (such as sogginess and expansion). Leaks in the ceiling could indicate storm damage from wind and heavy rain, especially if a tree has fallen on your house.
  • Doors/Windows – Strong winds can blow out window panes (usually caused by flying debris) or knock down trees which can break through windows or doors. Exterior damage can include shattered glass, dents to windowsills/window casings, broken door frames, unhinged doors or significant cracking

In the event of any of these signs of storm damage, it is important to take care of it fast. Call SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion today for any of your storm damage needs at (618) 998-8828.

Let us help with your fire damage

4/23/2020 (Permalink)

Sometimes, fire damage to your Southern Illinois home may barely touch the interior but leave significant scars on the exterior of the building. When this happens, the restoration process may be less intrusive and more simple to go through, but a major amount of work remains to be done making sure that discoloration, smoke damage, and necessary reconstruction work all receive the attention they deserve. SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion's team can help you handle all of these tasks and more and even take some steps to prevent against fire damages in the future.

Restoring Color

Minor Reconstructive Efforts
Sometimes, some limited reconstruction may be necessary even when smoke and flame never touches the inside of your home. We can help you to make minor repairs such as patching up holes, replacing porch materials, and trimming trees to eliminate any sign of what might have happened before.
SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion brings friendly faces, years of experience, and affordable restoration services to your home when you need them the most. Call us anytime at (618) 998-8828.

SERVPRO Responds Quickly

4/23/2020 (Permalink)

Many residents in Southern Illinois enjoy setting off fireworks during the summer monthsespecially The 4th of July.  Sometimes things go wrong, however, and cause injuries to people or damage to property.  When areas outside your residence sustain damage in this manner, pests such as rodents and insects can come inside your dwelling all too easily.

If your home or business sustains fire damage in this manner, the holes burned into siding can seem minor.  However, rain water does not require large openings to infiltrate your home.  SERVPRO prepares our technicians according to IICRC standards to mitigate such situations adequately.

Rainwater can also substantially damage insulation, wiring, and interior walls.  If burnt out areas occur around second story levels, water can damage ceilings, also.  Our SERVPRO team can remove affected areas of siding and help you locate matching sections.

In homes where fire damage causes more extensive damage than just a few minor holes, SERVPRO employees are also able to remove the damaged materials so replacement work can happen more easily.  Often, though, we find that cleaning materials first reveals minimal damage that does not require this extra cost.  Saving our customers money through restoration by cleaning instead of replacement of materials means making everything "Like it never even happened," can cost considerably less than expected.

SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion wants you and your family to enjoy a safe and fun 4th of July.  When fire damage from any source causes your home damage, call us at (618) 998-8828 so we can help you protect your home.

How to Prevent Mold in your Business

4/10/2020 (Permalink)

When you own commercial property in Southern Illinois, it can be difficult to stay on top of everything that goes on in your building. Being vigilant about mold removal and prevention, however, can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Here are four tips on how to prevent mold and how to handle it quickly if you do find a growth in your building.

1. Keep Building Clean

Mold can feed off any organic material, particularly when it is accompanied by excess moisture. Make sure spills are cleaned up quickly and thoroughly so that fungus doesn't have a chance to thrive under your carpet or floorboards.

2. Keep Building Dry

Commercial mold cleanup specialists recommend monitoring your building's moisture level to reduce the chance of mold growth. Humidity should always remain at 30-50%. Dehumidifiers can be placed throughout the building to help keep the moisture level in the air where you need it to be.

3. Repair Damage Quickly

Mold removal isn't something you want to wait to do. As soon as you identify a problem, you should have professionals who specialize in mold remediation to assess and resolve the issue. They can also help you make a plan to prevent mold in the future.

4. Communicate With Staff

You can't be in your building all the time, so it's important to communicate with the people who are. Your custodial staff is a great source of information on what is going on at your commercial property. These employees are the most likely to notice problems early so that you can call someone to fix them.

While preventing fungus growth is likely your preference, mold removal can usually be a fairly quick process if you catch it early enough. Taking care of your building and communicating regularly with those who help do so can ensure that you are aware of any issue that occurs.

If you notice mold in your business, get it taken care of fast and professionally by calling SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion at (618) 998-8828.

Spring flooding?

4/9/2020 (Permalink)

Wow! March and April has brought in the rain with Them!

As many counties in the Southern Illinois area are under a flash flood watch, SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion wants you know know what this means and how this can be a problem for some of you.

So what are the terms used for flooding and what exactly do they mean?

  • "Flash Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood prone area move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.

  • Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.

  • Flood Watch: Be Prepared:A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

  • Flood Advisory: Be Aware: An Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning. However, it may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property."

(definitions were pulled from the National Weather Service and attached is the link : https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood-watch-warning if you would like any further details.)

These terms all have different meanings and you are responsible to take action as needed to keep you and your family safe when heavy rain comes your way.

Is My Fire Damage in Sevierville Big Enough for a Professional Cleanup Company?

4/9/2020 (Permalink)

As many of us spend more time cooking at home, we may increase our risk of a kitchen accident causing fire damage to our home. The flames may affect only one area of our home and leave behind soot and smoke. It can also leave behind a reminder only our sense of smell can perceive. Often, it is the foul smell of smoke and fire that drives us to seek professional help.

Homes in Southern Illinois can call upon our SERVPRO team for help. Regardless of the size of the fire, your curtains, furniture, and other surfaces may continue to emanate an odor that clings to everything you do. As homeowners, we may venture to the store and purchase aroma diffusers and scented candles from the vast array available. However, our efforts may fall short of neutralizing the odor and eliminating it once and for all.

SERVPRO technicians train in the classroom and on the field to address situations like yours. Our techniques and products are available to deodorize your home are far more efficient than what is available at your local supermarket. Here are a few of the options at our fingertips:

  • Air scrubbers
  • Odor pellets
  • Ozone generators

The focus of our application can vary from neutralizing odor molecules to eliminating them, and SERVPRO of Carbondale-Marion is your source for them all. Call us at (618) 998-8828 regardless of the size of your emergency and let us leave your home, "Like it never even happened."

Water Extraction from your Home

4/9/2020 (Permalink)

Discovering standing water in your home requires a confident and fast response from the homeowner and the responding technicians. Our SERVPRO team has multiple extraction units for many scenarios, but in most clean water disasters, the electric submersible pump can get the job done quickly and cost-effectively.

Electric submersible pumps can help up our responding technicians to begin cleanup quickly upon our arrival. Using minimal power from available sources or our generator brought to the worksite, we can remove standing water down to under two inches for more concentrated water extraction from other tools like our wet vacuums.

Why is the electric submersible pump so popular for extraction?

  • Versatility and mobility
  • Consistent and continual draw of standing water
  • Quiet operation
  • Does not require ventilation to run
  • Long discharge lines

Extraction is something that you hope never to need, but our SERVPRO of Carbondale-Marion team can help with efficient and powerful tools like our electric submersible pump. Give us a call anytime at (618) 998-8828.

Remove Water Quickly

4/9/2020 (Permalink)

Removing Water from Porous Materials in Carbondale/Marion Homes

The permeance of materials can be a crucial consideration for responding SERVPRO technicians looking to dry and restore damaged Sevierville properties. Understanding what areas are most likely to resist water penetration can help to focus drying machines and other equipment at the most absorption-prone surfaces exposed to the migrating water. Our team has multiple tools and equipment that can help with water removal ambitions when our technicians start mitigation, including:

  • Electric submersible pumps
  • Gas-powered trash pumps
  • Truck-mounted, engine-driven extractors
  • Wet vacuums
  • Self-propelled and stationary weighted extractors

During the scoping of the job to get accomplished, our professionals can catalog what porous materials are most in need of water removal. While these materials are among the fastest to become damaged by migrating water, in turn, they are also among the most readily extracted and dried. Much like a towel is more likely to absorb standing water than a wood plank, the towel can also be dried more quickly and efficiently than the plank can. This result makes porous materials a focus of both preventative care for your damaged residence, and a solid starting point for effective drying and restoration.

Carpets and Pads

Carpeting has a high permeance rating, as does the padding underneath it. Removing either the material or the moisture from these areas can protect costlier subflooring damage.

Wood Trim

Baseboards are often not constructed of the highest caliber wood, making it even more prone to saturation than carpeting and drywall. Restoration is not always possible for these materials, and they sometimes require replacement.

Drywall

Much like wood trim, there are many times that saturated drywall can be too severely damaged to protect. Removing water and moisture from gypsum can sometimes be costlier to dry than to remove and replace. Surface moisture meters can indicate the salvageability of wall materials.

These are some of the most commonly damaged materials after a water loss incident and the choices that must get made with them. Our SERVPRO of Carbondale-Marion team can help you to make these emergencies “Like it never even happened,” by calling (618) 998-8828.

Studies show that cooking is the main cause for most home fires and burn related injuries. With Thanksgiving being the busiest cooking day of the year.  It's good to know some safety tips to have a safe, and happy Thanksgiving holiday.

  • Never leave food that is cooking unattended, especially when frying or broiling food. The stove should be turned off if you must leave the kitchen
  • Keep anything that could easily catch fire a safe distance away from flames, or hot surfaces. Examples such as; potholders, towels of any material, paper or plastic bags, and wooden utensils.
  • Cooking surfaces should be kept clean to prevent grease buildup.
  • Always make sure to check the kitchen before leaving the home or going to bed.  Check to see that all ovens, stoves and appliances are shut off and stored correctly.
  • Have a fire extinguisher near by, and know how to properly use it if needed. Also smoke alarms should be checked monthly to see if properly functioning.

FROZEN PIPE PREVENTION

Short- and Long-term solutions for low temperature plumbing problems include:

  • Locate and seal cracks and openings in the walls, attic, basement or crawlspace.
  • Weather strip and caulk around crawlspace doors and basement windows.
  • Make sure your home is properly insulated. Pay special attention to areas where pipes are located.
  • Insulate unprotected pipes and don't leave gaps. Pipe sleeves simplify the process. Keep the pieces tight against each other and seal the slits and joints with duct tape.
  • Install storm windows over basement windows or replace the old windows with energy-efficient alternatives.
  • Find your main water shutoff so you can turn off the water quickly if needed. Locations vary — look in the crawlspace or basement where the water supply enters the house, inside a water meter box directly outside the house or near the water heater.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air flow around the supply lines. Move any cleaners or other chemicals out of the reach of children.
  • Keep your thermostat at the daytime setting during the night. If you'll be away for several days during subfreezing weather, keep it set above 55° F.

Be Prepared this Winter

Why is a Frozen Pipe a Concern?

  • When water begins to freeze, it expands. This can cause both plastic and metal pipes to burst, possibly leading to significant water damage to your home or business.
  • Since water expands when it freezes, it puts unwanted pressure on pipes.
  • As water freezes, the force exerted from the expansion can cause a pipe to burst, regardless of the strength of the material.
  • You may not know you have a burst pipe as the water has turned to ice. Once the temperature starts to warm and thawing begins, leaking and flooding can occur.

FROZEN PIPE WATER DAMAGE TREATMENT AND RESTORATION

The key to avoiding costly secondary damage is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property with proper mitigation. Our SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion team has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. We begin removing the standing water from your property with extraction methods, and rapidly dry your structure and contents with dehumidifiers that lower the indoor humidity levels, so your building dries out quickly. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO of Carbondale/Marion professionals will answer your call with rapid action and a full arsenal of drying equipment.
